En los Blogs de Capcom USA han puesto info sobre el futuro port de Okami para Wii. Se trata de un “behind the scenes” de cómo una idea sobre un juego llega a convertirse en un proyecto de desarrollo en la vida real, de la mano del Vice-Presidente de Planificación Estratégica y Desarrollos de Negocios, Christian Svensson. Vamos, el jefazo de Marketing que frecuenta los foros de Capcom con el nick de Sven.

Trayendo de vuelta a la loba (o cómo llegó a ser Okami Wii)

No es ningún misterio que Okami es un juego muy querido por los jugadores y la prensa. Simplemente ganó todos los premios que se te puedan ocurrir. Es un testamento de la visión inquebrantable y la atención al detalle de Clover.

No es ningún secreto que en su primer lanzamiento (nota de Yurinka: se refiere a la versión de PS2) no tuvo precisamente las buenas ventas que su calidad merecía. Esto se debe a varias razones; comentaré una más tarde.Vuestra opinión (No, de verdad)

Antes de nada, quiero hablar del feedback que Capcom ha recibido de nuestros clientes, al cual intentamos responder. Okami Wii existe específicamente por esta comunicación directa, especialmente la que recibimos en nuestros foros (los de Capcom USA).

Incluso antes de publicar el Okami de PS2, la prensa y los fans de Capcom constantemente nos preguntaban si llegaría a Wii, debido a que su mando parecía ideal para las técnicas de pincel. Joder, si hasta la semana anterior al anuncio de la versión de Wii, habían preguntas en nuestra sección “Pregúntale a Capcom” pidiendo el juego (y alguna carátula muy guapa de la versión de Wii creada por algún fan … reté a nuestro equipo de marketing para asegurarme de que la nuestra sea aún mejor).

El factor Ciclo de vida

Tras ver las continuas peticiones, empezamos a pensar seriamente sobre alguno de los factores que provocaron el bajo rendimiento de ventas del anterior Okami en occidente (no podría hablar por Japón). Una de las principales (y seguramente no la única), como vimos, fué en el punto del ciclo de vida de PS2 en el que llegó Okami.

Habiendo hecho en el pasado un análisis de en qué años del ciclo de vida una nueva IP rinde mejor (nota de Yurinka: IP=Industrial Property, es la licencia de un juego una saga. Ejemplos: Street Fighter es una IP propia de Capcom, FIFA es una IP de FIFA que se la cede por muchos millones a EA durante unos años), no sorprende que no sea justo al final de dicho ciclo, en el cual los compradores tienden a preferir series consolidadas, además de ser muy sensible con el precio.

Pero aquí estuvimos distribuyendo un bonito, nuevo y creativo título para PS2 cuando la 360 ya estaba en el mercado y quedaban pocos meses para el lanzamiento de PS3 y Wii. Desafortunadamente esta belleza y creatividad no siempre la premia el mercado, pero es lo que hay.

La mayoría de nuestros principales clientes estaba pensando en las nuevas plataformas. Y mientras triunfaba otra nueva y destacable IP como God of War, la cual salió a la venta ese mismo año (aunque 9 meses antes que Okami), aún fué una batalla imposible de la que no pudimos sacar tajada.

El segundo disparo

Pero al mismo tiempo, empezamos a pensar unos cuantos “¿y si…?”. ¿Y si le hubiésemos dado una segunda oportunidad a Okami en otra consola? Una plataforma para la cual la gente nos ha estado pidiendo el juego. Una plataforma que ayude con la forma de jugar las principales técnicas del juego. Y ahora es cuando el semi-conocido y amado por la prensa, ya no es técnicamente una nueva IP. Se merecía una segunda oportunidad. Gracias a dios, otros en nuestra empresa pensaban lo mismo.

Nuestro equipo en CEI empezó a sondear el potencial en Japón para ver si esto podría ser algo que molestase mucho políticamente. Como recientemente era de esperar, nuestros ejecutivos de Japón nos apoyaron mucho con el concepto. Para situarlo en el calendario, era enero del 2007 cuando empezamos a explorar en serio este proyecto

. Wii había sido lanzada 6 semanas antes y, pienso que es justo decirlo, estaba sobrepasando en mucho nuestras espectativas de entonces (sin embargo esto no fué un factor clave de nuestra decisión).

Empezamos a ver qué recursos del juego tenían archivados en Japón y en qué estado estaban. Por último, y quizás lo más importante, si esto llegaba a hacerse, necesitábamos a alguien que pudiera calzar el tan querido zapato de Clover. Cosa que no fué precisamente fácil.

Vale, ¿y quién va a desarrollar esto?

Necesitábamos una desarrolladora talentosa con un currículum de calidad a la altura del título por el bien del juego, por el bien de los fans y por el bien del aprobado de la junta de jefazos. Esto en ningún momento un port cutre como alguno de vosotros puede haber leído en mi respuesta a aquellos que lo presumieron (bajad el scroll para ver mi respuesta.

Nota de Yurinka: su nick es ‘Sven’). El proyecto era de lejos demasiado importante como para hacer algo que no fuese esforzarnos al máximo para asegurarnos de que todo iba a ir bien.

Ahora no soy uno uno de los principales chicos encargados de las relaciones con desarrolladores externos, pero tengo una buena lista de contactos en el mundo de los desarrolladores gracias a mi anterior cargo, y firmé muchos desarrollos, por lo que de vez en cuando estoy involucrado en esas búsquedas y casi siempre estoy en las negociaciones de contrataciones.

De todas formas, el haber elegido a Ready at Dawn fue más una fortuíta coincidencia que no una brillantemente planeada estrategia.

El poder de la cerveza

Estaba bebiendo la otra noche en la suite de la GDC de Jamil Moledina (nota de Yurinka: es el director de la GDC), cuando un amigo me presentó al co-fundador y Director Creativo de Ready at Dawn Ru Weerasuriya. Una vez supo que yo trabajaba en Capcom empezó a babear hablando de lo que amaba la maestría de Okami.

Obviamente, teniendo en cuenta que lo había hecho Clover y Capcom Japan, ciertamente no podía hacer otra cosa que darle la razón en sus alabanzas al encanto del juego. El mérito fué de ellos. Estábamos en mitar de marzo del 2007.

Al mismo tiempo, RAD(nota de Yurinka: Ready At Dawn) ganó un premio IDGA por su trabajo en Daxter, un juego que respeto enormemente por su gran realización. Y estaba bien advertido de lo que aportó el equipo pasado ya que anteriormente habían sido empleados de Naughty Dog y Blizzard (Ru ha sido últimamente aclamado y probabemente conozcais mucho de su trabajo ya que ha participado en sus principales juegos).

Hablamos un rato mientras tomábamos unas cuantas cervezas más, y cuando la charla acababa, Ru me caía cada vez mejor. Las cosas en las que RAD estaba realmente interesada, encajando perfectamente con lo que en CEI ponía como prioridades y cómo afirmaba que debía funcionar las operaciones de desarrollo de juegos.

Pensé que si el resto del equipo de RAD compartía su pasión, ¿quizá sería por algo? No había mencionado nada acerca Okami Wii aquella noche pero a hurtadillas le sugerí reunirnos una semana después GDC respecto a una potencial oportunidad. Ru estaba intrigado y nosotros estábamos de acuerdo en hacerlo.

Realmente, no estaba seguro que ellos quisieran encargarse de hacer un port viendo su éxito con Daxter y su actual proyecto de altísimo nivel, God of War: Chains of Olympus. También he escuchado que ellos quieren crear sus propias IP con futuros proyectos. Pero esas cosas al menos siempre merecen una charla para analizarlas.
