Inafune: Strider, Breath of Fire, Mega Man 10, Dead Rising 2 y las hamburguesas de pollo

En 1Up han hecho una entrevista a Keiji Inafune, oficial de gestión de la corporación, jefe del departamento de investigación y desarrollo, y jefe de negocios online en Capcom Japón.

Como es muy larga, os hago un pequeño resumen de los principales temas que se tratan:

1UP: Como recordarás, en el pasado te preguntamos bastante por Mega Man. Especialmente sobre Mega Man Legends 3, el cual realmente hace falta que se haga.

Habitualmente respondías que si en el mercado había la suficiente demanda. Pero luego, Mega Man 9 llega con un look eminentemente retro. ¿Que proceso siguieron para hacerlo?

A veces nos dices que el mundo no está preparado para un nuevo Mega Man, pero luego lanzáis el Mega Man más hardcore y de la vieja escuela posible.

Keiji Inafune: Recibímos un montón de peticiones para que hiciésemos un remake de Mega Man, y yo tenía muchas ganas de hacer un remake del juego. Pero cuando lo analizamos desde el punto de vista del negocio, era muy complicado.

No porque no fuese suficientemente popular. Pero hacer un remake con la calidad técnica de Devil May Cry o Resident Evil sería muy difícil, y estuvimos barajando opciones cuando vimos que era una posibilidad vender pequeños juegos vía descarga.

Vimos que teníamos la oportunidad de volver a lanzarlo, y como descarga era viable hacerlo como una sequela en plan retro, idea que me encantaba. Pudimos basar el nuevo Mega Man en el diseño original de la franquicia, y si la gente apoyaba esa iniciativa, entonces podríamos movernos hacia mejores oportunidades con esta franquicia.

Ése es el proceso que seguimos para decidir cómo hacer algo que de verdad les gustase a los usuarios.

1UP: Si el juego tiene éxito y hacieis, digamos, Mega Man 10 ¿qué haríais para que el juego no pareciese un refrito de antiguos Mega Man?

KI: Este título ha sido revivido basado en el feedback de nuestros usuarios. Ellos dijeron qué querian volver a ver otra vez, por lo que si intentaremos buscar vias para involucrar su feedback para evolucionar el juego, y así continuar con Mega Man 10, Mega Man 11, etc.

La clave es cómo y si podremos continuar incorporando el feedback de los usuarios en la creación del juego.

1UP: ¿Cuanta gente hay actualmente en el equipo de Mega Man?

KI: No mucha. 20-25 personas. En comparación con un equipo medio de Capcom, es un equipo muy pequeño.

1UP: Guau. Comparado con los primeros juegos, a los que MegaMan 9 se parece visualmente, y fueron hechos por pocas personas, parece grande. ¿Cuantas personas tenía el equipo original?

KI: El equipo original tenía sólo 5, 6 o quizá 10 personas. Pero no podemos hacer juegos ahora como los hacíamos entonces.

La cantidad de trabajo que hacía una persona era mucho mayor. Las cosas han cambiado y no importa lo pequeño que sea un proyecto, probablemente no podríamos hacer un juego con 10 personas hoy en día.

1UP: Tenéis algunos personajes de Mega Man Legends en Tatsunoko vs Capcom. ¿El que aparezcan allí significa que hay posibilidades de ver por fin una nueva secuela de Mega Man Legends?

KI: [Risas] Creo que estás equivocado. Me gustaría poder hacer un nuevo Mega Man Legends, pero no, el que aparezcan en el Tatsunoko no significa que lo vayamos a hacer. Creo que lo estás interpretando mal.

1UP: ¿Hiciste ilustraciones para Mega Man 9 como hiciste para el original?

KI: Me encargué de dos jefes finales. Podría haberlos hecho todos pero por restricciones de tiempo hice sólo dos. Respecto a los otros, no tenía planeado estar involucrado en ellos, pero los bocetos eran muy malos, por lo que rediseñé algunos.

1UP: ¿Qué jefes finales fueron los que diseñaste desde cero?

KI: Plugman y Splashwoman.

1UP:  He escuchado cómo empezó el revival de Bionic Commando, gracias a que había un dibujo del juego en la tarjeta de negocios de un intrépido periodista (Nota de Yurinka: el periodista era James Mielke de 1Up, quien le está haciendo esta entrevista).

Con esto en mente, me gustaría regalarte esta tarjeta de negocio que lleva como motivo otra de mis sagas favoritas de Capcom que se han perdido en el olvido, Strider.

KI: [Risas] Capcom tiene un montón de buenos personajes, tanto ahora como en el pasado, y estoy muy interesado en traer de vuelta a algunos del pasado. Cuando estás en Japón y no te das cuenta de la popularidad y el interés que hay en los personajes de Strider o Street Fighter, por eso los teníamos parados.

Pero al haber hecho el remix HD de Street Fighter II y Street Fighter IV, hay posibilidades de que podamos hacer otro juego de Strider. Es una de las franquicias que me interesa revivir, por lo que pienso que hay posibilidades reales de revivirla.

1UP: Cuando fuimos a Osaka a ver Resident Evil 5 Kanda-san, Manager de publicidad de Capcom, nos preguntó que juegos de Capcom deberían volver.

Y algunos respondimos Gun·Smoke o Captain Commando, pero todos coincidimos en Strider. (Nota de Yurinka: Final Fight no sale aquí porque los derechos son de Capcom USA).

KI: Esos comentarios tienen mucho valor, y espero que podamos hacer juegos de acuerdo con ellos. No puedo prometer nada, pero creo que podemos hacerlo.

1UP: Hemos escuchado que Dead Rising 2 está siendo desarrollado por un desarrollador Occidental. ¿Por qué no dejar que el equipo de desarrollo del original haga la secuela? Me vienen a la cabeza flashbacks reales de Devil May Cry 2.

KI: Que el juego esté siendo desarrollado por un equipo occidental sólo es un rumor, como también lo es que estemos preparando una secuela. Por lo que no puedo comentarlo. Pero siento que el juego original estaba incompleto.

Admiramos el estilo de desarrollo de los juegos americanos, y queríamos hacer un juego que tuviese éxito en los USA. Nuestro equipo japonés trabajó duro para replicar el estilo americano. Les pedimos que hicieran “una hamburguesa que se pudiera comer”.

La gente dijo que “si, hicísteis un trabajo decente haciendo una hamburguesa al estilo americano, pero de alguna forma sigue teniendo el sabor de una hamburguesa japonesa”.

Me hubiese gustado hacer un juego con un estilo más americano, tener más feedback de Capcom International (nota de Yurinka : división que lleva USA y Europa, donde trabaja Sven), y por supuesto de la prensa americana.

Y por supuesto si hay un equipo de desarrollo de los USA que nos fuera a ayudar, pienso que también necesitaríamos su ayuda.

1UP: La diferencia entre las hamburguesas americanas y las japonesas es que los americanos sólo quieren carne en la parrilla, y que esté bien cocinada.

A los japoneses en cambio les gusta mezclarlas con pan y cebolla, lo que las hace parecer más un bocadillo de carne. Básicamente nos estás diciendo que Dead Rising tenía demasiado pan y cebolla.

KI: [Respondiendo con cara seria] Hmm. Como lo diría… Nuestra respuesta en los USA era más a cómo les gustaría una hamburgesa Teriyaki (Nota de Yurinka: hamburguesa de pollo japonesa). Pero, ahora mismo, una hamburguesa Teriyaki japonesa es diferente a una hamburguesa Teriyaki americana.

Una hamburguesa Teriyaki americana es dulce, de acuerdo. Pero, cuando un japonés hace una hamburguesa Teriyaki, le pone una base más grande de salsa de soja.

Y si hacemos la hamburguesa en Japón y se la damos a japoneses para que la prueben, ellos no sabrán que la hamburguesa Teriyaki americana se supone que tiene que ser dulce.

Por eso necesitamos ayuda desde occidente, pero tampoco podemos dejárselo todo a los USA. Porque entonces sólo sería una hamburguesa americana, igual que el resto de las disponibles. Y nosotros queremos continuar teniendo nuestro sabor propio.

Por lo que, si esos rumores son ciertos, si un equipo de desarrollo occidental está haciendo el juego, nuestro equipo de Japón y concretamente yo mismo, estaríamos involucrados de pleno en el proyecto.

Estoy seguro que deberíamos poder hacer las hamburguesas con el mejor sabor si mezclamos lo mejor de ambos mundos la próxima vez… si fuese verdad.

1UP: Te has ganado más credibilidad respondiendo eso poniendo cara seria.

KI: [Risas] Quiero aclarar que aunque eso sean rumores, Capcom está haciendo un esfuerzo por trabajar de cerca con desarrolladores europeos y americanos. Tras Dead Rising y Lost Planet, sentimos que debemos aprender un montón sobre cómo hacer juegos con estilo occidental para occidentales.

Así es como se siente Capcom internamente. Queremos crear juegos que funcionen bien en USA, como Bionic Commando y otros títulos que no hemos anunciado aún, y hacemos diferentes tipos de juegos con desarrolladores de allí para aprender de ellos.

La respuesta de los usuarios occidentales, la respuesta de la prensa, y la respuesta de los equipos de desarrollo es muy importante para nosotros, y queremos usarla como base para futuros títulos.

1UP: Puede que ahora no toque, pero Ben Judd (productor del remake de Bionic Commando) mencionó que tenía “un puto as en la manga. Es un as, un puto as…”.

Asumo que hablaba de algo de Bionic Commando en concreto, pero ¿puedes ofrecernos alguna pista? ¿Hay algún gran anuncio en camino?

KI: Bueno, tenemos un montón de grandes anuncios en camino por lo que no sé a cual se refería. Capcom está trabajando en un montón de sorpresas y creo que hay mucha expectación por parte de los usuarios para los próximos lanzamientos. Pero no sé a cual se refería…

1UP: Sobre las antiguas licencias de Clover Studio (Viewtiful Joe, God Hand, Okami…) ¿que haréis con ellas?

KI: Ahora mismo, no tenemos planes de hacer secuelas de ninguna de estas sagas. No te digo que no nos gusten o que no vayamos a continuarlas más adelante.

Si no tuviésemos ninguna saga más para hacer juegos nuevos, crearíamos ahora mismo sin ninguna duda secuelas de esos juegos, pero no es el caso.

Tenemos un montón de otros títulos de los que queremos hacer secuelas y que la gente espera con más ganas. Por tanto ahora mismo no estamos interesados.

1UP: ¿Pero Capcom tiene los derechos sobre las propiedades intelectuales de Clover Studio, no?

KI: Si, pero actualmente no estamos interesados en usarlos.

1UP: Una última pregunta para los fans del Rol. ¿Hay alguna oportunidad de ver un nuevo Breath of Fire?

Hablo de uno nuevo para esta generación, no un port de los primeros para una portátil. Personalmente es uno de mis favoritos.

KI: Actualmente no hay planes de hacer un nuevo Breath of Fire. Aparte de esto, los RPG son muy populares en Japón, pero sólo ciertas sagas concretas del género venden bien, por lo que Capcom no necesita ni siquiera considerarlo como opción.

Hay poquísimas posibilidades de que hagamos uno en un futuro cercano. Actualmente hay un montón de títulos en esta situación: hay muchos fans de la saga esperando, y tenemos trabajadores interesados en hacerlo, pero no tenemos los recursos necesarios.

Square Enix y Namco-Bandai tienen 1200 personas desarrollando, pero nosotros sólo tenemos 600. Hay un montón de cosas que queremos hacer, títulos que probablemente venderían bien si los hiciésemos, pero no tenemos suficiente personal.
